Japanese Hanging Lantern — A Guide For International Buyers Sourcing From Vietnam
Note: This article is written in Vietnamese-Nhật style, but for English-searching buyers who want to source authentic Japanese-style lanterns from a Vietnamese workshop. Bài này viết cho khách quốc tế tìm xưởng đèn Nhật ở Việt Nam.
I'm Truong, owner of KAHA workshop in Phu Thanh Ward, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. After 8 years crafting Japanese-style lanterns for restaurants, spas, and resorts across Vietnam — and increasingly for international clients in Singapore, Australia, and the US — I've learned that buyers searching for "japanese hanging lantern" in English usually fall into three groups. Each group needs different guidance. Read 4 minutes.
Three types of buyers searching this term
Group 1: Designer / architect specifying for a Japanese-themed project
You need authentic-looking lanterns with proper construction (real bamboo frame, real washi paper texture). You're sourcing for a hotel lobby, restaurant, or residential project where appearance and durability matter.
What you should know: There's a difference between "Japan-imported" lanterns (rare, very expensive) and "Japanese-style lanterns made in Vietnam by a workshop with Japan-trained craft knowledge" (more accessible, often equally beautiful). KAHA falls into the second category.
Group 2: Restaurant / izakaya owner abroad opening a Japanese concept
You need lanterns shipped internationally to your venue (Singapore, Sydney, etc.). You want quality + reasonable price + international shipping support.
What you should know: Sourcing from Vietnam is cost-effective compared to sourcing directly from Japan. Quality can be very close if the workshop uses real washi (not printed paper) and bamboo (not plastic).
Group 3: Private collector / cultural enthusiast
You want one or two pieces for your home — appreciating the craft, not commercial use.
What you should know: We sell individual pieces. No minimum order. We can ship to most countries via DHL or air freight.
Three traditional hanging lantern types
Chochin (提灯) — round lantern with handle
Round or oval, 25–50cm diameter. Suspended from ceiling by fabric cord. The iconic Japanese restaurant lantern.
Use cases: izakaya halls, ramen shops, sushi bars, themed cafes. Best hung in clusters of 3+ pieces.
Andon (行灯) — standing or pedestal lantern
Cylindrical or box-shaped, 40–80cm tall. Sits on floor or counter. Traditional Edo-era home lantern.
Use cases: hotel lobbies, restaurant entrances, tatami room corners, residential decor.
Bonbori (雪洞) — small lantern for specific positions
Smaller (15–25cm), used in pairs or singles. Some versions have stands (50–100cm tall).
Use cases: bar counters, premium restrooms, spa massage rooms, garden pathways.
Material — what to ask the workshop
When sourcing, ask these three questions:
1. "Is the paper real washi or printed paper?" Real washi has natural fiber grain visible when held to light. Printed paper looks uniform. Real washi is harder to tear in straight lines.
2. "Is the frame real bamboo or plastic?" Tap it gently. Real bamboo gives a hollow wooden sound. Plastic gives a dull synthetic sound. Real bamboo has slight natural irregularities.
3. "Is the lacquer real urushi or sprayed paint?" Real urushi: deep natural gloss, smooth like polished stone. Sprayed paint: artificial shine, can be scratched off easily. Urushi takes 5–6 weeks to apply (7 layers, 4–5 days dry time per layer) — cannot be rushed.
If the workshop quotes "ready in 1 week" — it's not real urushi.
KAHA's approach
We source washi paper from Kyoto workshops (Kurotani village especially) and combine with bamboo frames crafted in Vietnam by trained craftspeople. Lacquer is applied using the traditional urushi 7-layer process.
This hybrid approach gives you:
- Authentic materials (Kyoto washi + real bamboo)
- Lower cost than fully Japan-made (Vietnamese labor + sourcing efficiency)
- English-speaking support for international clients
- Flexible MOQ — single pieces to bulk orders for hotels
Customization options
Kanji script: hand-inked traditional brush calligraphy on washi before frame assembly. Common requests: 福 (good fortune), 寿 (long life), 美 (beauty), or restaurant/hotel name in Kanji. MOQ for custom characters: a few pieces (we can advise based on your project).
Custom dimensions: any size from miniature (15cm) to oversized (1m+). Provide drawings or photos.
Color variations: standard washi colors include ivory, indigo, gray, deep red, and sumi-black. Custom Pantone-matched dyeing possible for orders of certain volume.
Pricing approach
I don't publish fixed prices online because lantern pricing varies significantly by:
- Size
- Material grade (Kozo / Mitsumata / Hosho washi)
- Lacquer type (urushi 7-layer vs simpler finish)
- Custom Kanji or design
- Order volume
Contact us with: type of lantern, dimensions, quantity, intended use, and budget range. We'll quote within 24 hours.
For reference, premium 45cm Andon with full urushi finish starts in a mid-tier range, with significant volume discounts for orders above 10 pieces.
International shipping
We've shipped lanterns to:
- Singapore (DHL air freight)
- Australia (sea freight for larger orders)
- USA (DHL or sea freight)
- Europe (sea freight for bulk)
Each lantern is individually wood-crated with foam padding around the bamboo frame. We handle export documentation and customs paperwork.
Lead time: production 5–8 weeks + shipping 1–4 weeks depending on destination.
Project timeline
Step 1: Brief (1 day) — you describe needs via WhatsApp / Zalo / email Step 2: Quotation + 3D mockup (2–3 days) Step 3: Approval + 50% deposit Step 4: Sample production (1–2 weeks for one piece) Step 5: Sample approval Step 6: Batch production (4–6 weeks) Step 7: QC + packing (1 week) Step 8: Shipping (1–4 weeks depending on destination)
Total: 8–14 weeks from inquiry to delivered on-site.
Care guidance for clients
Once installed:
- Washi paper: dust with dry cloth monthly. No water.
- Lacquer frame: wipe with slightly damp cloth occasionally. No solvents.
- LED bulbs: use E14 socket, 3–5W warm white (2700K), CRI 90+ for best appearance.
- Replacement washi: after several years if paper yellows or tears, we can supply replacement washi panels to install (cost-effective vs new lantern).
Common questions from international clients
Are KAHA lanterns "authentic Japanese"? Materials are sourced from Japan (washi paper, urushi lacquer). Construction is by Vietnamese craftspeople trained in traditional Japanese technique. Each piece is hand-finished. We're transparent about this — not claiming "made in Japan" but offering Japan-equivalent quality at accessible pricing.
Why source from Vietnam instead of Japan directly? Cost (Vietnam labor + sourcing efficiency), flexibility (smaller MOQ, faster lead times), and English-language support. For volume orders, savings vs Japan direct can be substantial.
Can you provide certification of materials? We provide invoices and shipping documentation for washi paper sourced from Kyoto suppliers. We can include photos of materials and process for major orders.
Do you have showroom photos / video walkthroughs? Yes. We can do video calls showing the workshop, materials, and current pieces. Just request via Zalo or email.
What's your warranty policy for international orders? 24 months on bamboo frame and lacquer (manufacturing defects). 12 months on washi paper (proper storage). Shipping insurance handles transit damage.
